We were delighted to attend the Big Dogs conference in Munich earlier this month. It was a two-and-a-half day event organised by Ruckus, one of our key strategic partners, which specialises in high-performance WiFi technology like access points and routers. Ultimately, Ruckus helps power the development of converged wired and wireless networks for enterprises and service providers.

Ruckus recently
made history by announcing the development of Ruckus Networks R750, the
world’s first WiFi 6-certified access point, making this a hugely exciting time
for Curve IT to be partnering with the firm. In other words, WiFi 6 is finally
becoming a reality.

Let’s take a closer look at what this means.

What is WiFi 6?

WiFi 6 is the latest evolution in WiFi standards – the last,
WiFi 5, was released over five years ago. WiFi 6 uses OFDMA – Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiple Access – which breaks down the signal into
sub-carriers and scheduling. In practice, this means that low-data-rate
transmission can take place from several users at the same time – and so many
devices can be connected simultaneously without a drop in WiFi speed and
performance.

As such, whilst WiFi 6 can technically increase client device speeds by nearly four times
compared with WiFi 5, its really transformative impact is in relation to
efficiency. It optimises network capacity and improves performance in busy
environments. It can also extend battery life of individual devices.

Ultimately, even the most ultra-dense indoor environments
will enjoy high-speed connectivity across all devices, making WiFi 6 a powerful
innovation for business across a range of sectors. Whether you’re running a
growing business with employees using multiple devices simultaneously,
developing a complex IoT ecosystem, or running an environment with large
numbers of visitors frequently arriving and leaving, like an events space, WIFi
6 should have a hugely positive impact.

The importance of
access points

However, to harness all these benefits, organisations need
to install access point such as routers which are able to connect a diverse set
of client devices – from simple IoT sensors which require low power and low
latency, through to devices running high-performance applications like 4K video
streaming or artificial intelligence solutions. This is where Ruckus’s new
access point comes in.

Crucially, WiFi 6 is backwards-compatible, so by installing
WiFi 6 access points organisations will not
be rendering their WiFi 5 devices obsolete. Rather, they will be putting the
foundations in place for a next-generation approach to wireless networking.

High-speed, high-bandwidth internet connectivity is going to
be a critical element in business operations over the coming years. From simply
keeping employees, partners, visitors and customers connected, to gathering IoT
data from across the organisation, to running high-performance, next-generation
applications, all will be powered by effective WiFi infrastructures. WiGi 6
will be genuinely transformative, and we are excited to be working alongside
one of the giants in the industry.

When it comes to delivering broadband services to shared buildings, often referred to as multi-dwelling units, converged services are vital to support a vast array of telecommunications networks and to offer an outstanding resident experience.

It’s no surprise that tenants expect high-speed, robust and reliable internet access and phone lines. But a long list of behind-the-scenes services also depend on communications networks, from door entry systems to security alarms, fire safety systems to building management systems (BMSs).

And this introduces a severe risk for Build to Rent (BTR) operators tasked with providing broadband services to shared buildings – that, during the build stage, they waste unnecessary time and money on duplicating the networks underpinning these services.

Broadband services to shared buildings – the importance of pre-planning

It is not untypical for the main build contractor to wait
until much of the foundational work has been done before going out to a
mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractor, who then subcontracts again to a cabling specialist for
installation of the infrastructure required by, say, the CCTV system. Even if
the networking process is introduced earlier in the build, an M&E
contractor will still need to employ different specialists for each of the
network-reliant systems outlined above. And each of those specialists will,
quite rightly, design and pitch a system which involves a full network with
their own specialist function running off it.

The upshot? A whole lot of unnecessary and costly
duplication.

This is why forward-thinking BTR operators should look to work with IT networking specialists from the outset when providing broadband services to shared buildings, in order to develop a converged network for the entire building or even estate. A converged network is a single physical (usually fibre and copper) network which is divided up into virtual sub-networks, or VLANs. Each VLAN is used to underpin a different core service, from back office functions to resident-facing WiFi.

The benefits of well planned converged services for build to rent are enormous. Aside from the substantial resource savings from avoiding duplication, a converged network is also far more future-proofed than multiple discrete networks. It provides a foundation for smart building tools and technologies, and enables the creation of genuinely seamless and innovative resident experiences, whereby Personal Area Networks travel with tenants throughout buildings and even across the entire estate.

However, all these benefits depend on choosing the right
converged services provider. How do you do that?

Begin with your brand

The best converged services providers will want to start
early in BTR project – right back at the conception stage. They will want to
work with your brand time as well as your operational team, to really
understand what kind of experience you are hoping to present to your tenants.
Network-dependent technology such as superfast internet, building-specific apps
and the Personal Area Networks outlined above can have a massive impact on
resident experience and the overall impression of your organisation.

Smart building
specialism

Smart buildings, which use IoT technology to proactive
manage everything from energy efficiency measures to predictive maintenance of
assets, are key to helping BTR operators run as efficiently as possible. They
can also play a crucial role in building an environmentally-friendly and
forward-thinking brand. As such, your converged services provider should have
experience in supporting and developing smart buildings, and able to advise you
on possible future developments.

Long-term partnerships

The life of a BTR property should be long-term, and so the partnership with your converged services provider should be too. Innovations in networking technology are happening at lightning pace and while the possibilities for smart buildings and innovative tenant experiences are only going to become more diverse, this will also have an impact of the provision of broadband services to shared buildings. A truly long-term and forward-thinking converged services partnership will enable you to capitalise on these developments as they emerge, and truly by a BTR operator for the future.

As a BTR operator, how good is your build to rent internet, wifi and network technology brand standard?

As home working increases and social media and traditional media formats move ever more to digital, FOBO – Fear Of Being Offline – fills many people with dread, and in the Build to Rent market it would be inconceivable to rent an apartment where a guest could not get online immediately.

With this reliance on ubiquitous high-speed connectivity, making sure your building has great Wifi is crucial. Curve IT believes that to ensure you are competitive in the marketplace you should have a clear strategy for what you want to deliver and how you will achieve it.

BTR operators might want to consider some questions around the provision of Wifi:

How can resident and customers connect? And their guests?

Should you block certain content?

Should Wifi be available only in certain areas?

Will you charge, and if so how, when, what for, and how much?

Should speed or the number of devices be limited?

While the first reaction of an operator may be, ‘Give everyone everything, all the time’, this approach can often give users a worse experience. As technology has become more advanced there are many ways to shape and manipulate the available bandwidth and your offering to provide the best possible solution. As no two buildings are identical, so Wifi networks should be adapted as well.

For project planning this can raise many questions. The first decisions should probably be around the build to rent internet network and whether this is something that the Operator wants to provide and manage themselves, or contract out to a company, or whether each individual supplier of IP services will provide their own. Is this likely to be in a capex or an opex budget?

At RIBA stage 1-3 it’s imperative that the M&E specification – and the vendor proposals received from this – match your ideas and values in your brand standard. If the design does not reflect what you want to achieve then variations and additional costs become more likely. Or worse you have a sub-standard installation of technology services.

Curve IT has years of experience working with customers to define their brand standards, and designing and creating solutions to meet these. We have advised on Wifi, networks, broadband provision, structured cabling, voice services, CCTV, TV and IPTV solutions amongst others.

A high tech BTR development with a converged network means all services can run within one infrastructure, offering better performance, reduced cost and more flexibility.

The post Why should Build to Rent operators consider Converged Networks? appeared first on Curve IT.

What is a converged network?

In simple terms a converged network is one where the data, video and telephone (voice) communication are grouped into a single network.

All of the services run over one set of infrastructure (switches and cabling), and the network is usually designed and managed by one company.

What services and applications could sit on a build to rent converged network?

HSIA – (high speed internet access) for residents

IPTV – television services

VoIP – Voice over IP telephony services for residents and staff

Access control and door locking systems

CCTV

Building Management Systems

Property Management Systems

Point of Sale

Digital Signage

In broad terms if the service or application is IP based, ie a packet on a network, then it can normally be part of a converged network.

What are the advantages of a build to rent converged networks?

Better performance; Reduced cost; More flexibility; Minimising environmental impact

Lower cost of installation: installing one core infrastructure can reduce the amount of cabling required, and ensure that switches are used in the most efficient way. We have seen cost reductions of around 30% moving from a traditional network architecture to converged.

Better network management: a high-performing network is critical for the smooth operation of all the services within your building and having a converged network allows you to choose a single operator to oversee these services, and so offer a better level of service to your residents and team. In the past you may have multiple different networks all managed by different vendors, meaning different SLA’s, help desks, operating hours etc. A converged network has one management platform which can allow better monitoring and allow issues to be identified and dealt with much more quickly.

Flexibility and future proofing: Having an enterprise grade active network means adding new or extra services and applications can be completed much more easily and potentially without having to add new cabling or hardware. It’s impossible to say any technology is ‘future-proof’ however the 10Gb standard is currently recommended and fully suited for most needs.

Better design and hardware: with all services running through one core infrastructure it often proves more cost-effective to increase the sophistication, capacity and performance of this core to levels that would not be commercially sensible if running multiple networks. We typically see a move from multiple 1Gb in a traditional environment to 10Gb in a converged, offering potentially a huge uplift in performance. This will normally include resiliency and redundancy to a much higher level.

Minimising environmental impact: a single connection manages and operates all the systems, meaning reduced power usage and carbon footprint. Less hardware takes up less space and ensures the right amount of switch ports are available, in the right locations. Monitoring network ports, cables, connectors and components in real time with an intelligent infrastructure management system allows the network to be managed far more efficiently and optimises energy consumption.

Are there other considerations?

Many, and this is where the design and management skills of Curve IT are paramount. These are just a few of the many considerations you will need to take into account.

Resiliency – how to deal with power failures. We can advise on UPS or generator back-up power.

Network resiliency – spanning tree? What support packs on hardware?

Redundancy – internet services into and out of the building and the routes these could take. Do you need geo-diverse routings? How many 9’s in your SLA?

Bandwidth management (WAN) – what do you need and when do you need it? What is the best model? Who is the best provider and do they have the interconnects you need?

Bandwidth management (LAN) – what applications do your residents / team need? Should some be limited? Do you want a revenue stream?

QoS – how, where and when?

VLANs – who and how to manage?

PAN – do your residents need a Personal Area Network?

If this seems daunting feel free to Contact the team at Curve IT on contact@curveit.com or 01273 806220

By 2021 one in four people in the UK – and nearly half of 25 to 34 year olds – will be renting, with huge investment going into multi-tenant developments in the Private Rental Sector (PRS), figures from the English Housing Survey show.

The multi-tenant sector is one of the hardest environments in which to deliver robust WiFi networks, with hundreds of residents living in close proximity using multiple devices, often at the same time.

Providing an IT infrastructure to support a multi-dwelling unit (MDU) requires a deep understanding of the fundamentals of WiFi technology.

The benefits of calling in Curve IT from the word go

While a good PRS developer will have strong conceptual ideas about the space they plan to create for residents, ‘generation rent’ is looking for far more than the bare essentials in their new home: the burgeoning use of smart phones, smart TVs and a plethora of connected home devices mean fast, immediate access to broadband and WiFi connectivity is today as essential as running water.

Curve IT are involved from RIBA stage 3 onwards.

Curve IT consultants begin by establishing the client’s aims for the residents and the building. An early site visit enables our IT team to brainstorm with and advise PRS developers, translating concepts into a tech spec which can be incorporated before construction even begins.

Using the most technologically advanced industry tools and techniques available, Curve IT will carry out a site survey across your premises, determining where there is most demand and identifying ‘dead spots’.

We provide comprehensive recommendations to create a secure, successful and fully scalable WiFi network.

Curve IT recommends a converged network, which is more efficient than multiple networks. The hardware cabling design can be fitted alongside other services rather than being retrospectively installed and the use of multiple communication modes on a single network offers a convenience and flexibility that is not possible with separate infrastructures. (By using a converged network, we save on cabling too.)

An optimised WiFi network throughout a building based on WiFi modelling means there is no over-scoping, reducing hardware and installation capex.

Advanced techniques such as Personal Area Networks (PAN) ensure the best experience for residents, including access to the IoT.

Additional services can be incorporated such as VoIP, CCTV, Security systems, door control and more.

High-capacity, reliable, secure broadband and WiFi for MDUs & PRS Broadband

Curve IT has the latest on-trend information about the IT systems which best benefit clients, actively seeking out systems that will save money and reduce carbon footprint. We help clients confidently address technology-related decisions such as speed of access and cabling, recommending enterprise grade equipment within a client’s budget to ensure a great feature set and good warranty level for equipment.

Early planning of IT infrastructure, networks and PRS Broadband before the building construction begins reduces time-consuming and expensive retrospective IT installation in the construction schedule – and prevents expensive variations in construction; we dovetail our installation into the other service installation schedules.

It also means Curve IT can adhere to and enhance demanding brand standards including:

Security controls within the building for residents to feel safe;

Minimum setting for the WiFi signal wherever a resident may be within the building;

A minimum number of wired ports within an apartment in the optimum locations;

A WiFi portal for residents that is user friendly and offers services, and further revenue opportunities;

Home-style technology delivered to enterprise standard within an MDU which feels individual to the resident but utilised by numerous tenants;

High speed Internet supply optimized for 5Ghz.

Newly appointed Head of Sales, Gary Bristow, discusses how businesses and events can benefit from offering a reliable, secure and free WiFi service.

The post Curve IT appoints new head of sales appeared first on Curve IT.

Here at Curve IT we’re continually improving the way we support businesses by designing and installing the most robust, scale-able and efficient WiFi technology, and now we’ve got something else to shout about: our new head of sales, Gary Bristow.

With free WiFi now seen by many as a basic human right, customers often expect to find it no matter where they are or what they are doing – and nowhere is this more apparent than in the hospitality sector.

The benefits of offering free WiFi

The increasing omnipresence of WiFi means a high percentage of people out and about want internet access 24/7, with hotels, restaurants, cafes and many retail outlets now offering free WiFi to their customers. There are some obvious benefits, such as:

An increased competitive edge
People actively seek out places where they can access free WiFi, and are more likely to recommend venues to friends and family.

Increased spending
Offering free WiFi to customers in a café, restaurant or shop means they’re likely to stay longer, and spend more money.

But there are other ways WiFi can add value to a hospitality business.

WiFi marketing portal

Curve IT has developed a WiFi portal specifically for the hospitality sector which is designed to enable businesses to promote themselves, engage with their customers, and capture useful data.

To ensure we can roll this out to a wide number of businesses – both in the South East and nationwide – Curve IT has appointed Gary Bristow as head of sales.

“One of the key advantages of using Curve IT’s WiFi portal means businesses can learn more about their customers, and get something back from them,” says Gary. “Traditionally ‘free WiFi’ has been pretty unregulated, so you’ll get people coming into a coffee shop and using the WiFi for six hours and only buying one cup of coffee, and the cost of the WiFi falls on the business owner.

“WiFi is often called ‘the fourth utility’ but you wouldn’t allow a customer to go into the kitchen and run a tap for six hours,” Gary points out. “With a bespoke portal from Curve IT the owner of the business regains some control in terms of bandwidth and data consumption- and gets something back from the customer.

“A custom portal provides opportunities for user engagement, analytics, data capture and more. That might mean social media interaction which encourages them to share where they are or ‘like’ something;customer information which enables some marketing action; or more advanced technology which can allow location tracking, footfall analysis or other data – even advertising space.”

Engage customers and control connectivity

In short a bespoke portal and internet gateway offers businesses more control over who uses their WiFi – and how.

With a bespoke WiFi portal in place businesses are able to influence customer behaviour.

There are many different ways of interacting with customers. (For example, a huge amount of targeted marketing can be done just through collecting a customer’s date of birth when they log in.)

A portal and gateway benefits everyone – from two or three users in a cafe to thousands in a residential building.

By controlling data transfer and bandwidth a more level playing field is created.

With a Curve IT portal and gateway, every end user will have a positive experience with connectivity no matter how many others are using the WiFi.

Brighton Spiegeltent was one of the first venues to deploy Curve IT’s WiFi marketing portal during the Brighton Festival.

Bespoke technology service

Curve IT can provide bespoke internet services to suit every business – be it hotel, retail outlet, multi-dwelling unit (MDU) or small scale business. The same service is also applicable to all types of events and venues; indoor or outdoor, temporary or permanent.

Usually the first step is an onsite visit so that the building or venue to be connected can be surveyed and information gathered about how many users will access the WiFi and what they will be using it for.

Understanding the venue is key to Curve IT ensuring the most efficient WiFi technology solution can be delivered. Curve IT works with industry leader Ruckus, whose solutions are smart, secure and scaleable, no matter how tough the environment.

“There’s a very structured approach to understanding the venue and its needs, measuring footfall and potential number of devices that might be connected,” says Gary. “Different levels of pricing are available for differing venue sizes, and we are even able to offer a ‘plug and play’ solution for smaller businesses.”

“The Curve IT team is experienced with all types of business – from small outlets to very large residential developments in the private rental sector (PRS), where it’s crucial that the IT infrastructure is able to respond to the inevitable changes in technology throughout the lifespan of the building.”

For more information about what Curve IT can offer your business, email Gary or call 01273 806220.

“Mobile professionals increasingly expect to be connected to WiFi anywhere and everywhere,” new research confirms.

If ever there was any doubt about the importance of providing “always on WiFi” a new report reveals just how much it impacts the daily lives of professionals worldwide.

Global mobile connectivity provider iPass Inc. (ipass.com) recently released its annual iPass Mobile Professional Report 2017.

The research focuses on the connectivity and smartphone habits of more than 1,700 mobile professionals worldwide and their connectivity preferences.

Their findings underline those of Curve IT: that people are dependent on WiFi both in their business and personal lives – and now so reliant on smartphones that they will do almost anything – including break social etiquette – to use them.

Research highlights included:

Nearly two thirds of mobile professionals (62%) say they feel “anxious” when not connected

72% admitted to checking their smartphone while they were in the toilet, 11% during a funeral and 7% while being intimate with another…

61% said that WiFi was “impossible” or “very difficult” to give up – in fact harder to give up than sex (58%), junk food (42%), smoking (41%), and alcohol (33%)

A quarter of respondents (23%) would choose WiFi over other daily essentials such as a bath or shower, and 19% chose WiFi connectivity above human contact (yes you read that right)

After cost and location, WiFi is a mobile professionals’ top priority when choosing a hotel

Mobile workers connect to eight public hotspots every week on average; one in five connects to more than 20

“Technology, and particularly smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, that there’s no scenario in which people won’t check their phone,” said iPass chief commercial officer Patricia Hume. “Moreover, they expect to be connected to WiFi; mobile workers just want to be connected.”

WiFi empowers a productive workforce

WiFi’s importance to productivity is the biggest reason why mobile workers feel so lost without it. Of those respondents who said they felt anxious without it, 31% said it was because they would find it more difficult to work remotely.

The report shows that mobile professionals use WiFi and cellular data very differently. Whether due to mobile performance issues, data restrictions, or reliability, it is still the dominant force in connectivity, particularly for data-intensive tasks such as video conferencing. 90% of mobile professionals say that they regularly stream audio/video content over WiFi, vs. just 34 % who do so over a cellular connection. Even lower-bandwidth internet tasks such as accessing cloud services and browsing the internet were roughly twice as popular over WiFi.

This is not an isolated trend. There were several findings in the report that demonstrate the importance of Wi-Fi for mobile workforce productivity:

More than half of mobile workers (58%) said that having no/poor WiFi would negatively impact their ability to do their job

Half of respondents said that they want to be instantly connected to WiFi on arrival at a hotel (50%), business meeting (53%), or airport (48%)

More than two thirds (68%) said they had decided against using a WiFi service when the registration process was overly time consuming or frustrating

WiFi is still unmatched in terms of its performance and reliability, and employers have a duty to ensure their mobile workforce can connect easily and securely, wherever they are. (The financial cost of unproductive and unhappy employees can be severe, and no business can afford to neglect the connectivity needs of an ever more mobile workforce.)

Alongside the ever-growing demand for wireless connectivity on mobile devices is the need for a reliable and solid infrastructure, and this is where Curve IT can help.

Researchers have detected a vulnerability in WiFi security, through which WiFi Protected Access II (WPA2) connecting traffic can be manipulated putting devices at risk of hacks. It concerns the authentication system which is widely used to secure wireless connections.

Watch this BBC News video for a simple explanation of the issue.

Since WPA2 is a protocol that secures all modern protected WiFi networks, laptops, desktops, phones, and other devices that support WiFi, are likely affected. Major developers, including Microsoft® and Google®, have stated they will be releasing patches soon.

Action for WiFi Security

Simply changing WiFi network passwords is not going to help – software and firmware will need to be updated to workaround this deep design flaw. The weaknesses are in the WiFi standard itself, and not in individual products or implementations. Therefore, any correct implementation of WPA2 is likely affected. To prevent the attack, users must update affected products as soon as security updates become available.

Understand what devices are present in your network, and be prepared to patch them as fixes become available. As a best practice, it is critical you have a proactive patching program in place.

Curve IT will be conducting the required patching for contracted devices as soon as the fixes become available. We will be in touch with all clients to advise on specific patches your company may require.

If you’re concerned about your WiFi connection, please do get in touch.

The Brighton Digital Festival currently running citywide is a great example of a Brighton success story, says Phil Jones as we chat over coffee in the buzzing offices of Wired Sussex in New England House, a membership organisation for companies and freelancers operating in the digital, media and technology sector.

A month long programme of events exploring digital culture and celebrating Brighton’s creativity, the BDF is an open programme of independent events augmented by commissioned arts and education programming. The programme this year has included thought-provoking digital art and music, conferences, performances, and opportunities to experience other worlds – with The Old Market in Hove proving a popular place to experience virtual reality. The festival which runs until 13th October has had a record number of visitors (including many of us here at Curve IT).

Wired Sussex and Lighthouse provided the platform for the festival five years ago, setting up a website and helping promote it, explains Jones. “It wasn’t curated and it wasn’t limited; anyone could do it. In the first year we had 40 events, the third, 130 and this year there are at least 200. It’s the fastest growing digital festival in the country.”

But then Brighton has a historical reputation of being very innovative, as Jones points out.

“Look at Brighton Pavilion – which someone once described as ‘the googleplex of its day’! It was very technologically advanced for its time, and was one of the first places in the country to have electric light.” The Body Shop and Stomp were other niche concepts which at the time could only have taken root in Brighton and went on to achieve global success.

It’s the same with the digital sector, he believes. “Brighton’s digital community was seen as ‘just a bunch of hippies with laptops on the beach’ but that hippy on the beach is often someone who can make an idea reality. Having ideas that push boundaries is the first step of innovation.”

In the early days of the Apple Mac, more people per head of the population had Apple Macs in Brighton than anywhere else in the whole of Europe, adds Jones. “People were buying a piece of kit designed to empower them and help them be creative. It was the seeds of the digital cluster we have today.”

Brighton now has one of the fastest-growing creative and digital clusters in the country, and the digital economy is the fastest-growing sector, worth more than £1million annually to the city – particularly impressive when you consider it didn’t exist 15 years ago.

The government-backed Digital Catapult centre, an R&D lab based in the Wired Sussex office, two floors above Curve IT, aims to support the creation of a host of new technology products, services and jobs and is currently running projects focusing on the Internet of Place.

Notably, the 5G testbed in Brighton is the first in the UK that isn’t based within a University.

“It’s not open for business yet but will be available very early in the New Year,” says Jones. “The 5G testbed in Brighton is another example of the city being the first place in the country to spot an opportunity, follow it up – and hopefully be part of an explosion of new businesses and technology. 5G provides the best connectivity for IoT, immersive tech, AI – it’s incredibly fast, much more stable and has very little latency.”

“Marek Kohn [a Brighton-based science writer] once wrote that the default position for Brighton is gazing into the distance, and I think that’s a metaphor for what we try and do in innovation terms – we try and gaze into the distance,” says Phil Jones. “Brighton welcomes ideas, it’s prepared to test new ideas and take them forward.”
